President John Dramani Mahama has announced the rollout of an ambitious nationwide project to establish modern 24-hour multipurpose markets, describing it as one of his key campaign pledges aimed at reshaping local economies and turning traditional marketplaces into fully integrated economic and service hubs.
Speaking at the launch of the first model facility in Bimbilla in northern Ghana, Mahama said the initiative goes far beyond conventional trading spaces, incorporating banking services, storage facilities, advanced fire and security systems, as well as social amenities such as restaurants, childcare centers, and emergency healthcare clinics.
The President confirmed that the project will be implemented across all 261 constituencies in Ghana, in a move designed to promote inclusive economic development and expand commercial activity nationwide.
He stressed that the initiative seeks to eliminate the seasonal limitations of traditional markets, arguing that “agriculture without an effective market system is meaningless,” highlighting the need to strengthen value chains between farmers and consumers.
Mahama also announced a key role for the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in introducing value-addition technologies to extend the shelf life of agricultural produce, reduce post-harvest losses, and prevent market gluts, thereby safeguarding the investments of farmers and traders.
In parallel, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs issued a strict warning to contractors, stating that delays or poor-quality work will not be tolerated and contracts will be revoked in cases of non-compliance.
During the visit, the President also inspected ongoing construction work on a 300-bed student hostel at the Bimbilla College of Education, as part of broader efforts to strengthen educational infrastructure in the region.
